Howard Carlos Smith Obituary

Howard Carlos Smith, age 82, passed away at home unexpectedly on June 12, 2023, in Scenic, Arizona. He was born June 1, 1941, at home in Farmington, Utah, to Kenneth Carlos Smith and Verla Maude Stringham (Hellewell). His grandfather, Howard Hellewell, delivered him.


Howard grew up in West Bountiful Utah, and from an early age, he worked on his uncle Delbert Noble’s farm. He graduated from Bountiful High School before serving an LDS mission to Florida, which included Puerto Rico. He was one of the first three missionaries to serve in Puerto Rico. He married Mary Ann Brown in 1965. They later divorced. He married Jolene Jaye Simons in 1983.


He graduated from Weber State College in 1963 with an associate degree in Diesel Mechanics, then graduated from Utah State University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree, and then went on to graduate with a Master of Science degree in 1975 from BYU. Howard was a South Jordan City Councilman, worked for Chevron Oil for several years, taught auto mechanics at Hillcrest High School, and later taught auto mechanics, photography, and welding at Alta High School. He also worked for Air Liquide, Eutectic Corporation, and then finished his career at Arnold Machinery as the Safety Director and Instructor. During his career, he moved his family to various places in Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho. After retirement he wrote eight books. He enjoyed traveling and speaking about his books and faith. He loved fishing, hunting, and spending time with family.


Howard is survived by his wife, Jolene, his children, Glenn (Trish), Anthony (Kate), David (Penny), Michael (Bobbi), Jolene (Garrick), Danica, Catrina, 11 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, and 8 step-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Carlos Smith, step-mother, Alice Smith, mother, Verla Maude Myers, step-father, Lee Myers, and three sisters, Dixie Smith, Colette (LaMar) Stringham, and Sondra Ertmann.


A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 11:00 am, at the Farmington City Cemetery, 500 S 200 E, Farmington, UT 84025
