September 26, 1935 — August 24, 2023 Mesquite
Anna Lou Daniels Gleave Hughes passed away on Thursday, August 24th, 2023 at the age of 87 in her home with family members. Anna Lou was born at the ranch home on September 26th, 1935 outside of the town of Annabella, Utah. She was the third of 6 children born to Paul Maurice and Fauntell Thurston Daniels. Anna Lou loved growing up on a sheep ranch in Annabella. She attended grade school at Monroe elementary and high school at South Sevier High School both in Monroe, Utah. In high school she participated as a member of the pep squad and graduated from there in May of 1953. After high school she attended Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. She married John Evan Gleave on January 21st, 1954 in the Manti, Utah LDS Temple. As newlyweds they traveled to California for employment which only lasted three months because Anna Lou got homesick, they then moved back to Annabella where John Evan found work. John Evan decided he wanted to be a teacher so they moved to Logan, Utah to attend Utah State University. After graduating they moved to Annabella again where John Evan was a teacher at Richfield Elementary for 7 years. During those years they had 4 children Angie, Laura, Mary and John. They then moved to Milford, Utah where John Evan was a principle for a year. John Evan had health issues and passed away in July 1964 leaving 4 young children and a 5th child on the way. Patti was born in December and mom called her “her life-saver.” For the next 8 years she continued to live in Annabella and raise her family as a single mother. Her parents and John Evan’s parents were close and helped as well. After a few years she obtained employment with Sevier County Court as a Clerk, a job she really enjoyed. Anna Lou met Charles DeMar Hughes on a square dancing blind date and they were married months later on January 16th, 1973, Charles DeMar Hughes had 8 children and Anna Lou had 5 which made a total of 13. They started their new adventure in Mesquite, Nevada where DeMar lived. In 1974 they added one more son to make it “yours, mine and ours.” She worked for Clark County School District for several years as a special education aide. Anna Lou had various church callings and loved serving the Lord. She served as Relief Society President twice, Primary President, Young Women’s President, many years as ward organist in the Annabella Ward and various Mesquite Wards, Primary pianist for many years as well, Den leader in Cub Scouts and with her husband, they took care of the drop box for Deseret Industries for many years. They also were called to take care of the baptism clothing for the stake. In 2002, DeMar and Anna Lou served in the Cove Fort Mission, making numerous friends and it was the highlight of their lives. After their mission, they were dedicated patrons every Monday for over 15 years at the St. George Temple. Her greatest accomplishment was raising her 14 children. She dedicated her life to serving her family and was a devoted wife. She loved music and shared this love with her family and the ward members. She made pajamas for all of her grandchildren, sometimes 35 pairs a year, from 1977 through 2020. She crocheted baby blankets for many of her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She had to bury not one husband but two. It was hard for her to let DeMar pass away in July 2021. She was able to be at home by herself until she suffered a stroke in April. Since then her family has taken turns staying and helping care for her until her passing. Which has been such a joy for them all.
